One day, about five years ago, John came home with a shiny new Starbucks coffee mug with the skyline of Florence on it. He had seen it and impulsively picked it up because he knew I would love it. Florence is very special to us. It’s where we got engaged while I was doing a study abroad program in art history and John was working for a vineyard. So when he handed me this little gift I was so surprised and I loved it! I used that mug every day until a couple of weeks ago, when the handle broke off while I was loading the dishwasher.
Yesterday John came home with another surprise. A brand new mug in my favorite color! He had seen it and picked it up because he knew I had broken my favorite mug and that I would love it. I was so touched by his sweet gesture, and I gave him a big hug and kiss and told him how much I loved it!
Alex piped up from behind his dinner plate. “Dad, are you teaching us how to treat girls?”
You see, John is always torturing the boys regaling the boys with his advice on girls. For example there is this gem. “When you like a girl, you look her in the eye and say ‘How you doin?'” His advice is normally met with eye rolling and me saying “No! Don’t do that!”
So I thought it was really cute that Alex picked up on this. And yes, I assured him. This was definitely a good lesson on how to treat girls!
